National Moonshine Day

Today is National Moonshine Day, so of course, the team at Old Tennessee Distillery Company has no choice but to celebrate with all of you. Here down South, drinking moonshine is almost a rite of passage, with the alcohol’s infamous history bringing a sense of pride to those who dare to drink it.

Before you get down to celebrate, let’s take a look back on how hooch went from bootleggers to the shelf of your local liquor store. In 1877, the Four-Mile Law was amended, which prohibited the sale of intoxicating liquors within four miles of any country school. This virtually banned the liquor business in rural Tennessee. The Pendleton Act of 1907 extended the Four-Mile Law to the larger cities, and by the end of the year, only Memphis, Chattanooga, Nashville, and LaFollette were wet. With these laws in place, moonshine distillation would occur discreetly in the rural areas of Tennessee during the night to avoid discovery from law officials. Moonshine production was concentrated in Appalachia because it was easy for distillers to hide their production. Even after Prohibition ended, the culture and legacy of moonshine lived on in the South, and today you can get your hands on the forbidden alcohol from the Old Tennessee Distilling Company.

It’s hard to recommend which moonshine you should drink on this beloved holiday because there are almost too many to choose from here at Old Tennessee. Here are a few out of the 21 options we offer that can help you feel rebellious today!
