New Year’s Resolution: Drink More Tequila
Drink more tequila – that’s our New Year’s Resolution for 2020. Alcohol tends to have a bad reputation for being unhealthy. We are here to tell you today that not all alcohol is bad for you. Some is actually very beneficial to your health overall. For starters, the natural sugar that tequila contains is from its originating plant, agave. However, our bodies do not recognize these “agavins” as sugar. Our bodies instead treat them as fiber, and it can actually lead to a lowered cholesterol and can even help in losing weight! There are even more types of alcohol that have been shown to have health benefits, like red wine, whiskey, and rum.
Red wine has actually been proven to improve heart health and prevent things such as coronary artery disease and heart attacks. Red wine is filled with antioxidants (more so than white wine). Antioxidants are known to protect cells and reduce inflammation throughout the body. It can also keep insulin under control. Unfortunately, wine has a lot of sugar and there is no getting around that one, but a 5-ounce glass of red wine a few times a week has some great proven health benefits. So, we say cheers!
A single shot of whiskey has just as many, if not more, antioxidants than red wine does. Interestingly, whiskey has also been shown to fight and prevent cancer by absorbing cells called “rogue cells.” Taking a shot of whiskey is a common way to relieve the symptoms of a cold because it soothes a sore throat, acts as a decongestant, and can suppress a dreaded cough. Yes, you now have an excuse to take a shot of whiskey when you’re feeling under the weather!
Like whiskey, rum also has qualities that have been shown to prevent a common cold. It has also been linked to improving heart health, preventing cancer, decreasing the chance of getting dementia, and can significantly reduce anxiety. It has even been shown to increase your lifespan by two to five years when consumed in moderation.
Hopefully, you learned something new about one of your favorite types of alcohol. When the next person asks you what your New Year’s Resolution is, enjoy the look on their face when you tell them, “drink more tequila.” Of course, all of these facts are based on drinking these wines and spirits in moderation, so drink responsibly!
